How difficult is gorilla trekking?
In this blog about gorilla trekking, we address one of the most common questions: “How difficult is gorilla trekking?” Gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda and Rwanda offer a unique mix of adventure, nature connection, and personal growth, appealing to both the young and the young at heart.
The minimum age for trekking is 15, and there’s no maximum age limit. The difficulty of gorilla trekking depends on several factors, including the location, the gorilla family you’re visiting, the weather, and your fitness level. Overall, gorilla trekking is moderately to highly challenging. However, with the right gear and support team, almost anyone can do it. Here are a few things to consider when planning your gorilla trip:

What’s the Terrain Like in Gorilla Parks?
The trek to see mountain gorilla in Uganda and Rwanda takes you through thick forests and rough, hilly terrain, with lots of steep slopes, uneven ground, and muddy or slippery spots.
The thick vegetation can also make it challenging to move around. To handle this kind of terrain, a good level of fitness, balance, and agility is helpful. However, there’s no need to be an athlete to enjoy the trek—just being reasonably active and prepared for a bit of physical effort will be enough!

At What Altitude Do the Mountain Gorillas Live?
As their name suggests, mountain gorillas live at high altitudes. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, home to the world’s largest population of mountain gorillas, sits between 1,160 and 2,106 meters above sea level. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, also in Uganda, ranges from 2,227 to 4,127 meters.
In Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is located between 2,400 and 4,507 meters. Walking at these heights can make you feel out of breath or tired, and dehydration is common. We recommend bringing two liters of water and some snacks because you’ll likely get pretty thirsty!
How Long Does Gorilla Trekking Usually Take?
Rangers will do their best to match you with a gorilla family that suits your fitness level and interests. The trek can vary from a short, easy walk of about an hour to longer, more challenging hikes that can last three hours or more. This is before you spend the one hour observing the gorillas.
The total gorilla trekking experience usually takes around half a day, including the hike to and from the gorillas, and the time spent with them. Keep in mind that the time spent trekking can vary depending on the gorillas’ location on the day of your trek, so it’s important to be prepared for a longer or shorter journey.
What’s the Weather Like?
Rain is common in the rainforest, so be prepared for wet conditions. The weather can vary from hot and humid to cold and rainy. To handle these changing conditions, it’s important to wear the right clothes and be ready for a bit of endurance at times. The temperature can also drop unexpectedly, especially in higher altitudes, so layering your clothing is a good idea. Always be prepared for rain, and bring a waterproof jacket and sturdy shoes for the trek.
What Assistance Is Available?
Mountain gorilla trekking is organized and led by expert rangers, with support from porters and our experienced driver guides. Our driver guides and staff at Orugano Bwindi Lodge have tracked gorillas many times, so they can give you great advice on what to pack in your day bag. They’ll also make sure you have enough water and can help you arrange walking poles if needed.
At the briefing point, wildlife rangers will give you important information, and you’ll have the option to hire a porter (or even two). Porters can be really helpful—they’ll carry your belongings and assist you in tough spots on the trail, easing some of the physical effort. If you need extra help, don’t hesitate to ask.
For those who need more support, it’s possible to be carried up the mountain on a simple chair or stretcher. What started as an emergency service has become a safe and comfortable way for older or less mobile visitors to reach the gorillas. Our expert travel consultants can arrange these extra services for you.
