Things to Do in Entebbe, Uganda

Though many travelers pass through Entebbe on their way to other destinations, it’s definitely worth a visit. Spending at least a day here gives you a chance to experience the lakeside lifestyle. Here are eight must-do activities in Entebbe:

1. Explore Lake Victoria

Take a boat ride on the calm waters of Lake Victoria and watch local fishermen in their traditional wooden boats as they cast their nets. The lake sparkles like silver, reflecting the lush surroundings, offering a peaceful glimpse of Uganda’s natural beauty. You can even join the fishermen on a trip to catch tilapia and Nile perch. As the sun sets, enjoy the stunning view of the lake changing to shades of orange and pink, with fishing boats silhouetted against the sky.

2. Visit the Entebbe Botanical Gardens

Take a stroll through this vibrant garden, where local guides will show you plants with medicinal uses and trees home to tropical birds. The gardens also have an interesting historical twist—they were used as a location for the 1940s Tarzan movies. The walking paths lead you through different areas, from tropical rainforests to savanna landscapes. The garden is full of life: monkeys swing through the trees, butterflies dance around the flowers, and the rich greenery seems to come alive with energy.

3. Relax at the Beaches

Entebbe’s lakefront has several sandy beaches where you can watch fishermen bring in their catch or just relax with a cold drink. The vibe is laid-back, with locals and visitors gathering to enjoy the sunset over the water. Lido Beach is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, where the warm waters of Lake Victoria meet golden sands. On weekends, the beach is filled with families, music, and the smell of grilled fish and local street food. If you’re into water sports, you can try kayaking, paddleboarding, or swimming in the calm waters. From the beach, you get a great view of traditional fishing boats with Entebbe’s skyline in the background. Local vendors sell fresh coconuts and handmade souvenirs, adding to the lively atmosphere that reflects the relaxed lakeside lifestyle.

4. Search for Shoebills in Mabamba Swamp

Just a short drive from Entebbe, you’ll find Mabamba Swamp, a hidden gem where you can hire a local boatman to guide you in spotting the incredible shoebill stork—one of the most fascinating birds on the planet. These big, dinosaur-like creatures stand almost five feet tall, with prehistoric features that seem more prehistoric than contemporary. The swamp itself is a maze of papyrus-lined channels, teeming with life. You might spot African jacanas strolling delicately on lily pads or watch kingfishers darting through the lush vegetation, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise.

5. Visit The Local Markets

If you want to stretch your legs, take a walk through the suburbs of Entebbe to explore the lively local food markets. You’ll be surrounded by vibrant colors, tempting food smells, sounds, and the energetic atmosphere of the locals. During your walk, you can visit three local markets: Nakiwogo Landing Site Market, Kitooro Central Market, and Entebbe Town Market. These markets offer a taste of Uganda’s diverse cultures and are one of the most exciting experiences for tourists in Entebbe. Bring a few dollars to buy some fresh fruit or try local street food, like the popular Rolex (a flatbread and egg roll). You can book this adventure at least two hours in advance, and we’ll arrange a local guide to show you around.

7. Visit Uganda Wildlife Education Center

Uganda’s unique wildlife, include the iconic Big 5safari animals. The walk in the Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) is a must-do activity for wildlife enthusiasts in Entebbe. This center serves as a breeding, healing, and rehabilitation facility for animals rescued from poachers, illegal traders, or injuries in their natural habitats. The highlight of your visit is the guided behind-the-scenes tour at 6:00 am, where a local veterinarian takes you up close to the lion and tiger enclosures, and gives you the chance to feed giraffes and chimpanzees. After spending time with the animals, take a relaxing walk along one of the nature trails that wind through the center’s lush grounds, offering a peaceful rainforest vibe. The center stays open until 6:00 pm, giving you plenty of time to explore.

8. Visit Orphaned Chimps at Ngamba Island

Many people visit Uganda to see wild chimpanzees, often as part of a longer safari. However, if you’re short on time, trekking to see wild chimpanzees might not be possible, as there are no trekking locations near Entebbe. The good news is you don’t need to go on a full chimpanzee trek to see them. Instead, you can visit the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Located on Lake Victoria, just 23km south of Entebbe, Ngamba Island is part of the Koome group of islands. It covers about 100 acres, with 98 of those acres being forested for the 52 orphaned chimpanzees. You can easily reach the island by boat, either in a motorized canoe or speedboat, with different trip options available. You can choose a half-day or full-day visit, or even stay overnight if you have more time.
