Queen Elizabeth National Park: Uganda’s Most Diverse Wildlife Destination

Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most visited and most wildlife-diverse protected area. Named following Queen Elizabeth II’s 1954 visit, the park spans 1,978 km² across the western Rift Valley, bordered by the Rwenzori Mountains to the north and Lake Edward to the south. It is the only place on earth where you can reliably track tree-climbing lions in the morning and watch hippos from a boat in the afternoon.

Wildlife Highlights

The Ishasha sector is world-famous for its tree-climbing lions — a population of lions (Panthera leo) that rest in the branches of large fig trees, believed to escape insects or gain a hunting vantage point. Sightings are not guaranteed, but Ishasha is the best place on earth for this phenomenon.

Beyond lions, QENP holds Uganda kob in enormous numbers on the Kasenyi plains, elephants, Cape buffalo, leopards, spotted hyenas, and warthogs. The Kazinga Channel — a 40km natural waterway connecting Lakes Edward and George — has one of Africa’s highest concentrations of hippos (~5,000) and Nile crocodiles. Over 600 bird species recorded — one of Africa’s top birding parks.

Chimpanzees live in the dramatic Kyambura Gorge — a forested canyon cutting through the savanna — and can be tracked on guided walks.

• Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise — 2-hour guided launch along the channel. Hippos, crocodiles, and extraordinary birdlife at close range. One of Uganda’s best wildlife experiences. Suitable for all ages.
• Game Drives (Kasenyi Plains) — Open savanna gives excellent views of Uganda kob, elephants, and predators. Dawn and dusk drives are best.
• Tree-Climbing Lions (Ishasha) — Full-day game drives in the southern Ishasha sector. Allow a full day; patience is rewarded.
• Kyambura Gorge Chimp Tracking — A smaller, isolated chimpanzee population in a spectacular gorge setting. USD 50 per person.
• Maramagambo Forest Walk — Primates, forest birds, and the famous bat cave with huge pythons feeding on fruit bats.
• Crater Lakes Drive — 10 volcanic crater lakes within the park with diverse birdlife and beautiful scenery.

Best Months to Visit

• June–August — Driest months, best game viewing, excellent boat cruises.
• December–February — Second dry season, very good conditions.
• March–May / October–November — Rains make some tracks challenging but excellent birding during migration.

Altitude and Climate

QENP spans 910–1,390m. Temperatures are warm: 18°C–30°C. The park straddles the equator — there’s a marker on the main road. Rain can fall any month, heaviest in the two rainy seasons. Mornings and evenings are pleasant for game drives.

Drive Times

• From Kampala — 5–6 hours to Mweya Peninsula (park headquarters) via Mbarara.
• From Kibale NP (Kasese) — 1.5–2 hours. These two parks are the perfect pairing.
• From Bwindi (via Ishasha) — 2.5–3 hours to the southern park gate, then 1.5 hours to Mweya.
• Charter flights — Aerolink serves Kasese Airstrip, 30 minutes from Mweya.

Park Entry and Permits

Entry fee: USD 40 per person per day (foreign non-residents). Kyambura Gorge chimp tracking: USD 50 per person. Boat cruises are typically included in lodge packages or booked directly at Mweya. No gorilla permits here — Bwindi and Mgahinga are the gorilla parks.

QENP is a critical corridor for wildlife movement between the Albertine Rift forests and open savanna. The park has seen remarkable elephant population recovery over the past two decades following severe poaching pressure in the 1970s–80s. Community revenue-sharing from park fees funds schools and infrastructure in surrounding parishes, directly connecting local welfare to conservation outcomes.
