Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: Uganda’s Hidden Primate Gem

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park at just 33.7 km², but it punches well above its weight. Tucked into the Virunga Volcanoes chain in extreme south-western Uganda — where Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC converge — Mgahinga offers gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, and volcanic hiking in a spectacular high-altitude setting.

The park borders Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, forming part of the Greater Virunga Landscape transboundary conservation area. For travellers combining Uganda with Rwanda, Mgahinga is the logical Uganda gorilla base — it’s just 10 minutes from the Cyanika border crossing into Rwanda.

Wildlife Highlights

The Nyakagezi gorilla family is Mgahinga’s sole habituated mountain gorilla group, with 9–11 individuals including silverback Mark. Because there’s only one family and far fewer visitors than Bwindi, trekking here has an unusually intimate character.

Golden monkeys (Cercopithecus kandti) are Mgahinga’s most underrated draw — vivid copper-gold and black primates found only in the Virunga volcanic region. Two habituated groups can be tracked in the bamboo forest. The experience is one of East Africa’s most underappreciated wildlife encounters.

Albertine Rift bird endemics include the Rwenzori turaco, Kivu ground thrush, and handsome francolin.

Best Activities

  • Gorilla Trekking — One habituated family, 8 visitors maximum per day. USD 800 per permit. Intimate experience with fewer tourists than Bwindi.
  • Golden Monkey Tracking — USD 60 per person. Highly recommended — do both on consecutive days for an extraordinary primate double.
  • Volcano Hiking — Three peaks: Mt Muhabura (4,127m), Mt Gahinga (3,474m), Mt Sabinyo (3,645m). Sabinyo’s summit stands at the tri-country boundary of Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC. Permits and guides required.
  • Batwa Cultural Trail — The indigenous Batwa community offers guided forest walks sharing traditional forest knowledge.

Best Months to Visit

Dry seasons (June–August, December–February) are optimal for trekking and volcano hiking. Golden monkey tracking is excellent year-round. Important note: The Nyakagezi family occasionally moves across the border into Rwanda. Check with your operator before travel — this is more common in wet seasons.

Altitude and Climate

Mgahinga sits at 2,227–4,127m — significantly higher and cooler than most Uganda parks. Trekking zones are at 2,500–3,200m. Temperatures: 5°C at night to 18°C daytime. Heavy mist and cold rain are common even in dry season. Dress in warm layers; this is a cold, high-altitude environment.

Drive Times

  • From Kampala — 9–10 hours via Mbarara and Kisoro. Very long — fly-in or multi-day drive strongly advised.
  • From Kigali (Rwanda) — 2.5–3 hours via Cyanika border. Makes Mgahinga the logical choice for Rwanda-based travellers.
  • From Bwindi Rushaga — 1.5–2 hours. Easy combination.
  • Charter flight — Aerolink serves Kisoro airstrip, ~25 minutes from the park gate.

Permit Information

Gorilla trekking: USD 800 per person (same as Bwindi). Golden monkey tracking: USD 60. Volcano hiking: USD 40–80 depending on peak. Book through Orugano Safaris or Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Safari Combinations

  • Volcanoes NP (Rwanda) — Cross the Cyanika border in 30 minutes. Do gorillas on both sides for the ultimate primate safari.

Conservation Notes

The golden monkey (Cercopithecus kandti) is Endangered with a global population under 7,000, restricted entirely to the Virunga volcanic region. Mgahinga is critical to its survival. The Greater Virunga Landscape partnership — involving Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC — coordinates anti-poaching, habitat management, and community engagement across the three-country mountain gorilla range.

Packing Guidance

  • Warm layers — temperatures near freezing at altitude
  • Quality waterproof jacket (essential)
  • Sturdy waterproof hiking boots
  • Trekking poles
  • Gloves and warm hat for early mornings
  • Gaiters recommended
  • Sunscreen (high UV at altitude even on cloudy days)
