Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: Uganda’s Hidden Primate Gem

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park at just 33.7 km², but it punches well above its weight. Tucked into the Virunga Volcanoes chain in extreme south-western Uganda — where Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC converge — Mgahinga offers gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, and volcanic hiking in a spectacular high-altitude setting.

Wildlife Highlights

The Nyakagezi gorilla family is Mgahinga’s sole habituated mountain gorilla group, with 9–11 individuals including silverback Mark. Because there’s only one family and far fewer visitors than Bwindi, trekking here has an unusually intimate character.

Golden monkeys (Cercopithecus kandti) are Mgahinga’s most underrated draw — vivid copper-gold and black primates found only in the Virunga volcanic region. Two habituated groups can be tracked in the bamboo forest. The experience is one of East Africa’s most underappreciated wildlife encounters.

Albertine Rift bird endemics include the Rwenzori turaco, Kivu ground thrush, and handsome francolin.

Best Months to Visit

Dry seasons (June–August, December–February) are optimal for trekking and volcano hiking. Golden monkey tracking is excellent year-round. Important note: The Nyakagezi family occasionally moves across the border into Rwanda. Check with your operator before travel — this is more common in wet seasons.

Altitude and Climate

Mgahinga sits at 2,227–4,127m — significantly higher and cooler than most Uganda parks. Trekking zones are at 2,500–3,200m. Temperatures: 5°C at night to 18°C daytime. Heavy mist and cold rain are common even in dry season. Dress in warm layers; this is a cold, high-altitude environment.

Drive Times

• From Kampala — 9–10 hours via Mbarara and Kisoro. Very long — fly-in or multi-day drive strongly advised.
• From Kigali (Rwanda) — 2.5–3 hours via Cyanika border. Makes Mgahinga the logical choice for Rwanda-based travellers.
