4-Day Gorilla Safari from Kigali: Bwindi, Batwa Culture & Lake Mutanda
This 4-day gorilla safari starts in Kigali to Bwindi. For guests driving to Bwindi, this is often the quickest way in to southern Bwindi by road. This safari combines cultural experiences with the amazing wildlife encounters: gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a canoe crossing of Lake Mutanda to the historic Punishment Islands and the Batwa Cultural Trail, to learn about the acient forest culture and how the forest inhabitants lived alongside the gorillas and other animals. You will be staying at our own lodge on the edge of Bwindi.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Kigali to the Lodge & Kahurire Trail
Your driver-guide meets you at Kigali International Airport for the scenic drive through the terraced hills of Rwanda and on into Uganda’s Bwindi region stunning views of the Virunga volcanoes and lush countryside along the way. Depending on your airline arrival time and choice, you may opt for a Kigali city tour or proceed to the lodge, settle in and just enjoy the forest views listening for birds and monkeys. Accommodation: Our own boutique property, Orugano Bwindi Lodge, in the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi. Full board.
Day 2 — Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
After an early breakfast you transfer to the Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing point where a ranger assigns your group to one of Bwindi’s habituated gorilla families. Guests are divided in groups of about 8 people per group to visit a gorilla family. You then drive a short distance to the start of the trekking point and there after you enter the forest to where the gorillas are. This gorilla experience in Nkuringo takes four to eight hours and guests are usually back by 02pm. When you find them you have a full one hour to observe and be close to a silverback resting in a clearing, a mother nursing her infant, juveniles tumbling through the undergrowth or other experience. It is among the most profound wildlife encounters on earth. After enjoying the highlight of you trip and if you still have some energy reserves, you may choose an evening community tour covering local farming, crafts and the community’s relationship with the forest. Day 3 — Lake Mutanda Canoeing & Batwa Cultural Trail
Lake Mutanda is another is a crater lake also dotted with beautiful islands. The Virunga volcanoes in the background also make it stunningly beautiful. It also has a significant history worth exploring and so we set out to the historic Punishment Islands where local chiefs once banished wrongdoers. On the way, watch for waterbirds along the shore and human activity on the lake. Enjoy a picnic lunch by the water and thereafter return to Nkuringo. In the afternoon, walk the Batwa Cultural Trail: the Batwa are the original forest people of Bwindi, custodians of this ecosystem for thousands of years before the national park was gazetted. Their guides share knowledge of medicinal plants, fire-making, honey harvesting, forest hunting and traditional dances around a fire. This is a deeply moving experience and is always illuminating. Travellers with energy to spare can round off the day with a guided forest nature walk. Accommodation: Orugano Bwindi Lodge. Full board.
Day 4 — Transfer to Kigali & International Departure
Final breakfast with a view, then the drive back to Kigali in good time for your international flight.
