Reasons To Go On a Rwanda Safari
Rwanda is a tiny country, but there are just as many reasons to visit it as there are people living there. Even though it’s only 26,338km2 in size, over 13 million people call it home, making it one of the most densely populated nations on the African continent. Still, it stands out as a world leader in protecting nature. In fact, The World Travel Guide in 2015 called it the third greenest country on Earth. Rwanda also proudly takes care of four amazing national parks. Today, tourists come not just for camping or wildlife adventures with gorillas and chimpanzees, but also for luxury trips. And that’s only a part of what Rwanda offers. From museums that tell powerful stories to delicious food served with stunning city views, Rwanda is a country full of beauty, excitement, and hope
Gorilla Trekking
Get a close-up view of the magnificent mountain gorillas at Volcanoes National Park. Thanks to strong conservation efforts to protect these endangered animals, you have a rare chance to experience gorilla safaris. Sit quietly in the forest and watch as these gentle creatures play, eat, and interact with one another. Their deep, soulful eyes will leave a lasting impression on you.
Rich Primate Diversity
Nyungwe Forest National Park is a safe haven for many types of primates, including the well-known chimpanzees and 13 other species. You can also spot the rare Angolan colobus monkey, along with blue monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, and red-tailed monkeys in the park’s green, lush forests.
Birdwatcher’s Paradise
Rwanda is a dream destination for bird enthusiasts, home to 703 bird species, including 29 that are unique to the Albertine Rift. Nyungwe National Park is home to 322 species, while Volcanoes and Akagera National Parks each feature over 500 different kinds. The best times for birdwatching are from December to January and May to September. However, the long rains between March and May can make conditions a bit less comfortable.
Diverse Wildlife
Rwanda’s national parks each protect unique ecosystems, and Akagera National Park, located in the eastern part of the country, is a stunning wildlife sanctuary. Its hills, wide savannahs, and lakes surrounded by swamps are home to incredible species. Lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalo live alongside zebras, giraffes, and antelopes, while more than 500 bird species fill the skies.
Ecotourism Initiatives
It’s hard to choose anything better than seeing mountain gorillas in Rwanda—or watching chimpanzees in the wild, another unforgettable experience. These are some of my favorite travel memories ever. But what also really make Rwanda special is how it supports community-run tourism. These programs let travelers connect with local people and culture in a real and meaningful way. You can learn to make banana beer with local women in Red Rocks at Nkotsi Village, or join a walking tour in Kigali with the Nyamirambo Women’s Center, where you might even relax in a milk bar. You can also visit the Twa people—an often-overlooked group—to learn more about their unique culture.
