A little history of Jinja
Before Europeans arrived, Jinja was a small fishing village located at the source of the Nile, a place sought after by many European explorers in the 19th century. It was John Hanning Speke who became the first European to discover it after many attempts. In 1906, with British colonial rule, Jinja began to grow into a bustling trading hub and an important stopover point on the route to Kenya. The construction of the railway between Kampala and Mombasa brought many Indians and Europeans to the area. Thanks to the railway and the Owen Falls Dam, Jinja flourished as Uganda’s industrial capital. Today, Jinja has a vibrant town center, and you can still experience its colonial past, especially in the suburbs. Over the years, tourism has grown significantly, becoming an important source of income for the local community.
